Solar PV Trends in 2023

In our latest post, we are looking at some of the trends we are seeing in the commercial PV solar industry in 2023. There has been a lot of movement in the industry as we try to sum that up here.

Installation capacity is increasing: The commercial PV solar sector in Ireland has been seen steady growth in installation capacity. As technology improves and costs decrease, more businesses and organisations are using solar power to meet their energy needs. This growth is being helped by expanding policy support, growing energy security concerns and improving competitiveness against fossil fuel alternatives.

A general lowering in costs: After two years of tight supply chains, raw materials and shipping costs are declining in 2023. Global shipping costs have lowered to pre-pandemic levels and whilst it will take time for these to feed through the system, but organisations and consumers should start to see the benefit of lower energy process in 2023. However, to counter this, pushing prices upwards is the shortage of skilled workers, causing a rise in construction labour costs.

Government support: It is worth noting that European countries have introduced more policy and regulatory changes to ease permitting in the last 18 months than over the entire previous decade. The Irish government continues to support business with grants for energy efficient upgrades.

Integration of energy storage: Energy storage systems, such as batteries, are becoming increasingly important in commercial PV solar installations. By aligning solar panels with energy storage, businesses can store excess energy generated during the day and use it during times of high demand or when sunlight is not available.

Advancements in solar panel technology: Research and development in solar panel technology continue to drive improvements in efficiency, durability, and appearance. Innovations such as higher-efficiency solar cells, bifacial panels, and transparent solar modules are being explored to enhance the performance and integration of solar systems in commercial buildings.

Focus on digitalisation and monitoring: Digitalisation and data analytics are playing an important role in optimizing the performance and maintenance of commercial PV solar systems. Monitoring platforms and software applications enable real-time monitoring of system performance, predictive maintenance, and fault detection, improving overall system efficiency and reducing downtime.
